Radiation protection influences on design and construction decisions at Chernobyl
Presenter: Eric Schmieman
After 25 years of service, Eric Schmieman retired from Battelle in 2014. The last 13 years of his employment focused on remediation of the Chernobyl accident, including leading the conceptual design of the New Safe Confinement and living in Ukraine for eight years while serving as the Manager of Environment, Health and Safety and Senior Technical Adviser. His prior work experience includes SRO and STA qualification at commercial and US navy nuclear facilities, and domestic and international power plant engineering. Eric earned a PhD from the department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at WSU.
Eric Schmieman will present the Chernobyl accident overview, causes, consequences, site dose rates and regulatory limits. Details on the new safe confinement - building shape and dimensions, construction location (distance and elevation), and airborne activity and dropped load accident will also be discussed.
