Chernobyl Diaries: Health & Safety Experiences at SIP-PMU

Presented by Michael Smith and Don Kelly

Imagine the challenge of establishing and maintaining a safe work environment during construction of a one-of-a-kind structure in a heavily contaminated environment under a foreign regulatory scheme and with contractors and a workforce representing over 27 nationalities. The New Safe Confinement (NSC), is the world’s largest movable land-based structure.  The NSC was designed and constructed to contain and safely dismantle the destroyed Chernobyl unit 4 reactor, the site of the world’s worst nuclear accident. It is the most prominent element of the Chernobyl Shelter Implementation Plan, which involved more than 300 individual projects and activities. The presentation is intended to both inform and entertain through photos, experiences and stories from our assignment with the Chernobyl Shelter Implementation Project-Program Management Unit (SIP-PMU) ES&H Department at the Chernobyl Atomic Energy Station, Ukraine.
