The Science of Radiation Dose Reconstruction
Topic Abstract: Risk Assessment Corporation (RAC) has been involved in historical dose reconstructions for over 40 years. This talk explains the components of an environmental dose reconstruction from the development of a source term to the participation of stakeholders. It also discusses some common challenges inherent to the science, and explores some of the solutions to the challenges encountered. The talk covers several example dose reconstructions, including those done at the Fernald Feed Materials Production Center, the Uravan uranium mine site, the Nuclear Materials and Equipment Corporation Facility in Apollo, Pennsylvania, and the Cerro Grande Fire at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Speaker: Dr. Emily Caffrey
Emily Caffrey graduated in 2016 with her Ph.D. in Radiation Health Physics from Oregon State University. Her research included environmental dose assessment and computational dosimetry methods. She is now a consultant with Risk Assessment Corporation (RAC), specializing in performance assessments and independent environmental dose and risk assessments. Her expertise is in dosimetry and statistics. She also serves as adjunct faculty at the University of AL at Birmingham and at OSU.
