CCHPS Technical Meeting

February 2020

Direct Feed Low Activity Waste (DFLAW) Waste Feed Delivery System

Presented By James Franz

Come join the Columbia Chapter of the Health Physics Society (CCHPS) for our February 2020 Technical Meeting, as Mr. James Franz, CCHPS 2019 Early Career Health Physicist of the Year, provides a broad overview of the Hanford Site Tank Farms DFLAW Waste Feed Delivery System.  Jim’s presentation will include coverage of the “Tank Side Cesium Removal” (TSCR) system and associated upgrades needed to feed waste from AP Farm through TSCR to the Waste Treatment Plant (WTP) for vitrification.  TSCR is currently undergoing acceptance testing, and is designed to remove Cesium from high level liquid waste prior to feed to WTP.  TSCR employs a series of ion exchange columns and filtration to decontaminate the liquid waste by a factor of approximately 1,000.  The presentation will also include commentary specific to the design challenges relevant to radiation protection, shielding, and ALARA.

James Franz is employed as a Health Physicist with Washington River Protection Solutions, LLC (WRPS), at the Hanford Tank Farms.  In 2019, Jim received the CCHPS Early Career Health Physicist of the Year Award.  He is currently attending Oregon State University to pursue his graduate degree in Health Physics.  During the last few years, Jim has worked as a primary Radiological Controls Design reviewer for large scale waste feed projects at WRPS.
